Social Data Science Group (SDS)

The Social Data Science group is focused on studying various social phenomena on the Web (e.g., misinformation, radicalisation, misogyny) to better understand their patterns and dynamics and to research, develop, and assess appropriate socio-technical solutions. The group brings together social and technical expertise to research socially-driven computational approaches to characterise users and to process their content and interactions. The group succeeded in applying such approaches to monitor online behaviour, sentiment, and engagement, to filter relevant information in emergency situations, to automatically detect the spread of misinformation and to predict the influence of radicalisation. These solutions have shown benefit for companies, NGOs, police organisations and universities, including the OU.
